Prelude for Four Timpani by Christopher Deane was composed in January of 1984 as a musical gift for Carol L Stumpf, principal timpanist of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. This work can be considered as a “companion” piece to Deane’s Etude for a Quiet Hall, for solo marimba. Deane’s Prelude is a wonderful introduction to the potential of solo timpani.
