A LONG WINTER’S NIGHT is a four-mallet marimba/piano duet written for advanced high school to early collegiate percussionists. This work would be suitable for any percussion ensemble and/or student recital. The piece (written during one cold January evening) is structured in three distinctive movements reflecting the solitude created by the harsh and confining winter weather. Mvt I pivots around a haunting melody representing an introspective look at one’s own psyche. Mvt II exudes the peace found while sitting in front of a fire…bundled in a warm blanket…immersed in a great book that transports one into another time and place. Mvt III, with its contemporary harmonies and form, exhibits the brink of control that one approaches when confronted with “cabin fever”. Enjoy! -Edward Freytag
