Cascading Reflection is an energetic and fast-paced work scored for a large ensemble. Commissioned for the Texas A&M University-Commerce Percussion Ensemble 2023 PASIC Showcase Concert, “Cascading Reflection” was designed as a musical interpretation of a ripple-effect, with each melodic and rhythmic motif cascading into the next.
The title “Cascading Reflection” refers to the process of reflecting on one’s thoughts, actions, or decisions in a continuous and interconnected manner, often leading to deeper self-awareness and understanding.
The specific moment of “reflection” that inspired this piece is a conversation between Christopher Deane, Brian Zator, and myself in June of 2016 about a melodic idea in Chris’ piece “Etude for a Quiet Hall.” Looking back, that conversation initiated a ripple-effect in my own life, eventually leading to my involvement in the TAMU-C percussion program. “Cascading Reflection” serves as a musical “thank you” to Chris, as well as a celebration of the TAMU-C students and faculty.
