I few years ago I started writing a two-mallet marimba book and I dedicated one of the etudes to my friend and UNT comrade, Poovalur Sriji.   This original two-mallet marimba composition, My Friend Sriji, reflects Sriji’s style of composing but for a younger audience.   Sriji is an incredible musician, an inspiring teacher and a longtime friend.  My two-mallet etude reflects his amazing impact on our UNT percussion students, our musical community and me.

Sriji elected to perform my etude and apply South Indian musical concepts to the music.  Robert Chapman adapted and arranged these concepts into a written format for the UNT South Indian Cross-Cultural Ensemble.    I am humbled by this ensemble version, and I am grateful to Poovalur Sriji and Robert Chapman for taking my two-mallet etude to a much higher level!   Mark Ford
